Crafting the Perfect Cold Brew: From Bean to Brew

Cold brew coffee has become a beloved beverage for its smooth, rich flavor and refreshing taste. At SoTex Coffee, we’re passionate about the art of cold brew and the unique approach to roasting that brings out the best in this delightful drink. Join us as we explore the journey from bean to brew and uncover the secrets of crafting the perfect cold brew coffee.

Roasting for Cold Brew

Creating exceptional cold brew coffee starts with carefully selecting the right beans and roasting them to perfection. Unlike traditional hot brew methods, cold brew requires a different approach to roasting to achieve optimal flavor extraction.

At SoTex Coffee, we take a tailored approach to roasting for cold brew. We select high-quality Arabica beans known for their smooth and balanced flavor profiles, with an emphasis on beans that exhibit chocolatey, nutty, or caramel notes. These beans are then subjected to a unique roasting process that emphasizes sweetness and body while minimizing acidity.

During roasting, we carefully control the temperature and duration to achieve a medium roast level that brings out the beans’ inherent sweetness and complexity. This gentle roasting approach allows the beans to retain their natural flavors and oils, resulting in a smooth and flavorful cold brew coffee.

Brewing the Perfect Cold Brew

Once the beans are roasted to perfection, it’s time to brew the perfect cold brew. The cold brew process involves steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in cold water for an extended period, typically 12 to 24 hours, to extract the flavors slowly.

To make cold brew at home, start by coarsely grinding your freshly roasted coffee beans. Then, combine the ground coffee with cold water in a large container or pitcher, we use a 5 gallon Toddy cold brew container but use what you have. Using a ratio of approximately 1:4 coffee to water. Stir the mixture gently to ensure all the grounds are fully saturated, then cover and refrigerate for the desired steeping time.

After steeping, strain the cold brew mixture through a fine mesh sieve or a coffee filter to remove the grounds, then transfer the brewed cold brew to a clean container for storage. Cold brew can be enjoyed over ice, diluted with water or milk, or mixed with your favorite sweeteners or flavorings to create a customized beverage to suit your taste preferences.
